A vast reservoir in the southern Egypt, it was created as a result of the construction of the High Dam. Named after former Egyptian President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, as he was the main proponent of the High Dam project, the lake is 550km long, and 35 km across its widest point. It has become a very popular fishing destination. Nile perch, Tiger fish and Catfish are abundant here. With the beautiful desert scenery and clear waters, Lake Nasser is also the ideal retreat for those who enjoy fishing in a tranquil, scenic environment.

One of the most stunning ancient sites, the building of the two temples, carved out of rock, was ordered by Ramsis II. The temples were dedicated to himself and his queen, Nefertari. However, in the 1960’s, the temples threatened to submerge in Lake Nasser, due to the construction of the High Dam. What followed was one of the most historic removal and reconstruction in the world; the Egyptian Government, with the support of UNESCO, dismantled the two temples, raised them over 60 meters up the cliffs and reassembled them – a process that took four years, from 1964 – 1968.

Dedicated to the Goddess Isis, Philae is a Ptolemaic temple originally built on the island of Philae. When the high dam was built, the temple was relocated to Agilika, after the dam permanently submerged Philae.

Built in 1960, the famous High Dam is 111 meters long, and stretches across more than 3.6 km down the river Nile. From the top of the Dam you can see Lake Nasser, which stretches 500km behind the dam, making it the world’s largest man-made lake.

With the Nile sparkling at its bank, and the massive mountains imposing itself into the backdrop, Aswan is truly a sight to behold. Known to be the jewel of the Nile, it is home to the Aswan High Dam, where the flow of the Nile is regulated for all of Egypt. Known as Nubia in ancient times, Aswan still retains its Nubian cultural heritage, traditions and language. Visitors can enjoy Nubian folklore performances as well as the beauty of the ancient sites.
