Founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC as a seaport, Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and one with rich cultural heritage. Home to Pharos Lighthouse – one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the city flourished under the reign of Cleopatra (who co-ruled with Julius Caesar, then following his death, with Marc Anthony), becoming the center of learning, partly because of its famed Bibliotheca – the largest library of the Ancient World. In the 1800’s, after the Mahmudiya Canal was built, the city became the center of trade as merchants from Europe and the Arab world immigrated to this prosperous city. Today, Alexandria is a bustling city and a key attraction for visitors, combining the energy and quick-paced excitement of a big city with the relaxed, soothing environment of a small seaside town. View the vast collection of antiquities at the Alexandria National Museum, or enjoy a scrumptious lunch of fresh fish at one of the famous, local restaurants and enjoy the pleasures this city has to offer , starting from USD 70.00.
