Sultan Selim built the Quseir Fortress in the 16th century. The Ottoman Fortress was seized by Napolean’s troops in 1799, which armed it with canons mounted high on the walls. The fortress gradually lost its importance after the opening of the Suez Canal 1869. Presently, a refurbished museum has opened in the fortress, displaying historical memorabilia.
